Air Traveler Rights

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) protects airline passengers. Here is a short guide, with links to the official information.

Key protections in brief

  • Full-price advertising. Advertised fares must include all mandatory taxes and fees. Every price on our website does.
  • 24-hour cancellation or hold. For bookings made 7 or more days before departure, airlines must allow you to cancel within 24 hours without penalty or to hold the fare for 24 hours.
  • No price increase after purchase. Once your ticket is paid for and issued, the airline cannot raise its price.
  • Refunds for cancelled or significantly changed flights. If the airline cancels or significantly changes your flight and you decline the alternative, you are entitled to a refund, not just a voucher.
  • Refunds of fees. Including checked bag fees when bags are significantly delayed, and fees for extras you paid for but didn't receive.
  • Tarmac delays. Airlines must give you the chance to leave the plane after 3 hours on the tarmac for domestic flights and 4 hours for international flights, with limited exceptions, and provide food, water and working restrooms.
  • Denied boarding. If you are bumped from an oversold flight against your will, you may be entitled to compensation.
  • Disability assistance. Airlines must provide assistance at no charge under the Air Carrier Access Act.

For international trips, the rules of other countries may also apply, for example European Union rules on flights departing the EU.
